"Get out the map and lay your finger anywhere down."

It could be the nip in the air. It could be the episode of The West Wing that's playing right now. ("The War at Home", from just around midway through the second season...Abbey is mad at Bartlett for announcing his campaign for a second term in the subtext of his recent State of the Union...Ainsley Hayes celebrates her success on Capitol Beat by drinking a pink squirrel, and singing and dancing along to "Blame It On the Bossanova" when Bartlett walks in...Josh waits patiently for polling numbers on the address...Toby responds to a threat by a Dem congressman by saying "If you come at us from the left, I'm gonna own your ass."...and Bartlett deals with a crisis with narco-assholes in Colombia and gets ready to open a can of corn-fed, farm-raised, All-American whoop-ass on them. Good ep. BTW, I like that Aaron Sorkin thinks that his viewing audience would get a reference to Euripides and that a 30-something woman would choose "Blame It On the Bossanova" as a celebratory anthem. Pssh. She didn't have a copy of "You're the Best" from the The Karate Kid soundtrack?) It could be the commentary I'm reading from news outlets that Democrats are going to have a tough fight ahead for the midterms. Or maybe it's the work my friends in Cincinnati are doing to make their mark and leave the world better than how they found it.

Whatever the reason, I wish I was in the trenches, too!

Since I left Cincinnati, the feeling of missing it sort of comes and goes. I met a guy here in the 'burbs of Detroit who ran for State Rep in '08. His background is a lot like mine, he's a Democrat just like me, and he lost-- like, significantly. I asked him if he's involved in politics otherwise, if he's in the Young Dems, if he is volunteering for any of the city council campaigns in Detroit, etc, and he may as well have laughed in my face! It was as though the very prospect was a joke. I'm going to mull this over and do some research over WHY THE FUCK this is the case. I got a very skewed sample, but it was nice that 90% of the people I interacted with in Cincinnati were engaged in their city's well-being. If Detroiters (including myself) devoted maybe a quarter of the time we spent watching our beloved Red Wings to participating in civic causes, then we could prove once and for all that another Stanley Cup only does so much to improve our quality of life.

That said, GO WINGS!
