I have been writing each day's blog very late at night...so even if it says "October 18th", it's still the 17th to me because I haven't gone to sleep yet. And that means it's Jan's birthday! Happy Birthday, Mom! In honor of her birthday, and her getting through a tough year, and to a better year to come, I wrote a list of all of the ways my mom is similar to Eminem. (They have the same birthday.) I posted it to Facebook, but it's only appropriate to post it here as well. (For those of you that are not familiar with Eminem, you really ought to be. He can be vile, ridiculous, misogynistic, indulgent, and mean, but he's also a brilliant lyricist, producer, and rapper.)
1. They both identify strongly with Detroit. Em references the D fairly frequently in his music, he got his start in hip-hop in the clubs of Detroit, and his film debut was "8 Mile". (For the Detroit-simple, 8 Mile Road is the northern border of Detroit proper, separating the city from the northern suburbs.) Jan has lived in or around Detroit for nearly 3 decades, and raised 4 kids there. Also, her hubs has lived in Detroit for 56+ years.
2. They are both emphatically anti-Bush.
3. Their last names both start with 'M'.
4. Vibe Magazine named Em the "best rapper ever". I'm fairly certain that Vibe would call Jan "best mother ever", if they weren't so close-minded.
5. They both have conflict with Mariah Carey. Em's issue with her is a little more direct and high-profile-- the he said/she said about their relationship, the songs that may or may not be about each other, etc.-- while Jan's issues are that a) I used to play Mariah tapes in the car all the time and it would drive her nuts and b) she seems like a snobby whore.
6. They've both had problems with addiction. Em's weaknesses have been alcohol, prescription drugs, and narcotics. Jan's have been corn-on-the-cob, Diet Coke, and Sanders Hot Fudge.
7. They both use words carefully, uniquely, and cleverly. Em uses the term "motherfucker" with a little more frequency.
8. Neither of them have ever, or will ever, forget about Dre.
Happy Birthday, Mom-- I love you! I am excited for you to listen to ABBA Gold on your new iPod. "Chiquitita, tell me the truth."
