The 20% might go out and buy American tomorrow

I took a few days off from writing new entries-- my apologies to anyone that uses my blog for entertainment.

Not too much has happened since I last wrote. My prediction that I'd be wicked sore from my accidental run-in with slapstick comedy was dead-on. Friday was a MFer, for sure. I was fairly productive at work, though. This time of year can be slow for LGW, but there was stuff to do, and that was satisfying on some level. (The lion's share of what I was doing involved using an X-acto knife on thick foamcore, so my index finger was like, "Yo, bitch, get a new gig!" and I really couldn't blame it for saying so.)

Jan and I share a weakness for frozen cupcakes, and we made both chocolate and yellow ones. Jan makes awesome frosting, and she had the good sense to color the vanilla icing a lovely shade of petal-pink, so I've eaten a lot of refined sugar in the past few days. I feel like shit from it. I know several people who have major sweet-tooths (sweet-teeth?), and can eat a ton of sugary stuff without feeling any adverse effects besides a tightening of their pants. This is not the case with me. If I eat a lot of sugar, I feel awful. This is probably why I get such lethal hangovers. Hmm. Anyway, the cupcakes will be gone in a few days, and then it'll be another 6 months or so before another run-in with that particular monster. (Seriously, though, putting a frosted cupcake in the freezer is maybe one of the best things Jan ever taught me. It is genius. Frozen frosting [that's funny] is like ice cream except richer, sweeter, and prettier. It is worth the few steps closer to Type 2 diabetes.)

I watched snippets of the Superbowl tonight, and caught plenty of commercials to keep me completely frustrated with the zeitgeist. I had a laptop in front of me for most of the game and engaged in two different Facebook threads about that ridiculous Dodge Charger commercial. (It's called "Man's Last Stand", and I know I am contributing to the problem by posting this, but please look at it, so you can share in my disgust. http://www.youtube.com/dodge#p/a/u/1/2RyPamyWotM) I am well-aware that the Superbowl is sort of a holiday for the traditional heterosexual male, and that Dodge wants to sell its wares to these men, but must it be at the expense of sane, progressive treatment of gender roles?

It doesn't help that I had just read this article earlier in the day:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/07/fashion/07campus.html?ref=fashion&pagewanted=all

Is it obvious to everyone else that these two pieces of social commentary actually go hand-in-hand? Thankfully, I have friends who know better, and friends who alert me to smart and snarky rebuttals, like this one:

If I ever decide to pursue a graduate degree in gender studies or media, I'd love to write a thesis on this bullshit.
