Population increase

A high school friend of mine is in labor RIGHT NOW. I am waiting to hear from BFF Katie or BFF Molly-- they are my contact points on the phone tree regarding the arrival of this little guy.

Now, I understand that when a friend is expecting, it's customary to gush about how great of a mom she will be. It's part of the gig. But, this particular friend will be a GREAT mom. I don't know anybody quite like her. (I think a lot of people have had that same sentiment.) I am so excited for this baby to grow up and see the world through a perspective fostered by my friend and her brilliant husband.

If all of her kith and kin can be patient for a little while longer, there will be MUCH joy in Mudville. (Or Seattle. However you want to think of it.)

In other news, I had a wonderful coffee date with my friend Syed. He's another character in my life to whom I can't compare to anyone else. We had an extended conversation about career and fulfillment, and took a few moments to watch big pieces of ice float by on the Detroit river. It's nice to spend some hours with someone that you've known for more than half your life. There's a certain shorthand you develop, even if a lot of that time was spent far apart. In less than two weeks, I will be seeing some people that I've known even longer than I've known Syed; one of my best friends from the middle school era, Alison, is getting married on the 20th, and another bestie, Beth, is flying in from NYC to attend the wedding along with me. [I definitely mentioned this event sometime over the past few months.] I am getting so, so excited for this. Beth and Alison were both huge parts of my life during that time. I spent hours and hours at their houses; I probably ate more meals in Alison's kitchen than I did at my own. (During 7th grade, I think she was going through a serious growth spurt, because she was always hungry. This worked out nicely for me, because I was, and still am, pretty much always amenable to a snack. The phrase "let's go get some more food" was very common.) I cannot wait to revisit those connections, especially for such a great occasion. Alison is going to make a beautiful bride, and Beth is going to make a beautiful drinking buddy.

There's a very good chance that by this time tomorrow, my friend will no longer be expecting-- she'll be a full-on mamacita. Unheard of.
