My grandmother is in the process of moving out of her house and into a Grandma Dorm. (That's the term I've adopted. Get used to it. I don't know if it's assisted living, a nursing home, a senior community, whatever. I saw the place, and it looks like a dormitory for grandparents.) Over the next few weeks, the home she shared with my late grandfather will be packed up and condensed into a small apartment. Given my grandmother's age, it should be no surprise that she saves everything. My mom and I found serving trays that were made of hammered aluminum, that had been given to my grandparents for their wedding in 1946. For some reason, these trays are just incredible to me. They are over 60 years old. They were there for any cocktail parties, bridge nights, or holiday gatherings my grandparents threw. They aren't glass, silver, brass, etc.-- because of World War II, hammered aluminum was a common material for items like serving trays. They were once in a box that was tied with a ribbon, with a card attached saying, "Congratulations"-- they were given to celebrate a marriage that lasted for over 6 decades. I am loving those trays.
Other news: I have a scan tomorrow to make sure I am still free of tumors. I am not nervous right now but I can guarantee that I will be as soon as I wake up tomorrow. I've spent the past 4 days going back and forth about moving back to Cincinnati, and I just want to state for the record, to be sent to the attention of the Fates, that I do NOT want another tumor to be a deciding factor in this debate. GOT THAT? I'm not f-ing interested.
My campaigning friends have 7 days left until Election Day. One of them is a candidate himself-- good luck, Tony!-- and the others are busting their asses behind the scenes-- good luck, Russian! I hope that I am back on a campaign soon, but in the mean time, I am hoping beyond hope that this last week goes smoothly for my friends. And I also hope that Election Night is as ridiculously fun and celebratory as it was last year. (That is a tall order. E-Night 2008 was b-b-b-BONKERS.)
